Most of the world's glaciers are in Gilgit-Baltistan. Glaciers are melting due to adverse effects of climate change. The local population is facing threats due to floods caused by the release of water from glacial lakes. We all need to play our role individually and collectively with the international community to prevent the effects of climate change. Attention should be given to forest conservation and tree planting. The government of Gilgit-Baltistan is taking practical measures including awareness campaigns to protect the natural environment and prevent environmental changes. People should also play their role in protecting the environment and cooperate with the government.
Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Haji Gulbar Khan was met by Honorary Ambassador of Pakistan Prime Minister for Wildlife Sardar Mohammad Jamal Khan Laghari at Islamabad Camp Office. Speaking on this occasion, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan said that the role of the Conservation Committees in the protection of wildlife has been commendable. The government is taking full measures to protect the wildlife with the support of the local community. Due to the effectiveness and benefits of conservation committees, in the areas where there were concerns regarding conservation, now government agencies are being contacted for conservation in these areas as well. Most of the mountain areas in Gilgit-Baltistan where wildlife is present have been protected for wildlife by local conservation committees.
The representative of UN Women in Pakistan, Lansana Wonneh, met with the Chief of Gilgit-Baltistan, Haji Gulbar Khan. On this occasion, Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan Haji Gulbar Khan praised the successful organization of Women's Summit in Gilgit-Baltistan and said that the provincial government is taking practical steps to empower women in Gilgit-Baltistan. The government has also made necessary legislation in this regard. The female literacy rate in Gilgit-Baltistan is encouraging. They are also working for the empowerment of women in remote and backward areas and are taking necessary steps to improve the literacy rate of women in these backward and remote areas.
